Çeis Sequential Circulation

Maçka Democracy Park, Istanbul YARIŞMA, 1.LİK ÖDÜLÜ - 2019

Urban Design — Competition

Awarded first prize in the Çeis Building Design Competition in 2019, Ardışık Dolaşım (Sequential Circulation) was developed as a proposal that brings the innovative use of concrete together with a public experience. Challenging the conventional view of concrete as a heavy, static material dependent on formwork, the project transforms it into a light, flexible and shapeable surface. To this end, an inflatable PVC membrane was combined with concrete-impregnated canvas. Before they harden, the modules take up little volume, making them easy to store and transport. On site, the modules are connected by steel air ducts and inflated into the desired form; water is then sprayed onto them to set the concrete canvas. Requiring neither formwork nor excavation, this method saves material, time and cost while also reducing construction noise and waste. Proposed for Maçka Democracy Park, the system links the park's different levels through a sequence of spatial stops made of organically shaped concrete modules. Different arrangements of the modules create a stage for the performing arts, a screen for open-air film screenings, seating and resting areas, and play surfaces for children. Its modular structure means the system is not limited to this park and can be adapted to other public spaces. The same modules can become bicycle parking along the coastal road, or food and water stations for animals in parks and forests. In rainy weather they close up to form a sheltered space, and when arranged with gaps, their openings let in controlled light.
