Çeis Urban Web

Beyoğlu, Istanbul YARIŞMA - 2021

Competition

Prepared in 2021 for the Çeis Innovative Steps in Public Space Building Design Competition, Kent Ağı (Urban Web) addresses the problem of a city fragmented by highways, waterfronts, construction sites and high walls. To reconnect the public spaces these barriers have cut off from one another, the project proposes an organic, web-like modular system made of concrete. Set within the dense urban fabric of Beyoğlu, the system creates shade, seating and resting areas along pedestrian routes, at metro exits and in squares. Different combinations of modules allow the system to adapt to various scales and contexts without being confined to a single function. Defining walking and meeting areas on the horizontal plane, the structure can extend vertically onto building façades to become a green wall and an urban surface. Through plant-covered pergola configurations, the system creates shaded waiting areas, while underwater it serves as an artificial reef for marine life. In this way, the project reinterprets concrete not merely as a building material but as a flexible public infrastructure that connects people, nature and the city.
